Frequently Asked Questions
Can you take power tools in checked baggage?
Yes, most power tools are allowed in checked baggage. But there are important rules.
Lithium ion batteries must be removed from power tools. Carry these batteries in your carry on baggage. They are not allowed in checked luggage because they can cause a fire.
The tool itself can go in your lockable suitcase or hard shell suitcase for protection. Always check with your airline before you travel.
Can you put a digital camera in checked luggage?
You can, but we don't recommend. Cameras and other fragile items are better kept in your carry on luggage. This gives you easy access and better safety.
If you must check your camera, wrap it securely. Place it inside a waterproof luggage or waterproof suitcase to protect against moisture. For peace of mind, use packing cubes or padded cases.
Are laptops allowed in checked baggage?
Laptops are technically allowed. But we strongly advise you not to pack them in checked luggage.
A laptop packed in a large checked suitcase is at risk of theft, damage, or extreme temperatures.
For the best travel experiences, always keep your laptop with you. Place it in your personal item or carry on baggage — either under the seat or in the overhead bin.
What personal items should I avoid packing in checked luggage?
Avoid packing these items in your checked luggage:
- Lithium ion batteries (power banks, loose batteries). They are a fire hazard and prohibited by airlines.
- Medications. You may need them during your flight.
- Jewelry, cash, and valuables. They are at risk of theft or loss.
- Important documents (passport, ID). You need them for security and boarding.
- Fragile items (glasses, cameras, laptops). They can break easily.
- Spare power bank. This must go in your carry on baggage.
For peace of mind, keep all these items in your carry on luggage or personal bag.
What should I pack in checked luggage?
Your checked piece of luggage is ideal for:
- Clothing and shoes
- Toiletries (non-liquid or follow size rules)
- Packing cubes to organize your packing space
- Items you don't need during the flight
- Compression straps to maximize space inside your suitcase
- Non-fragile souvenirs
For large checked suitcases, use combination locks to secure your belongings. A hard shell suitcase with spinner wheels and water resistance will protect your items from bumps and moisture. This ensures better travel experiences.
What is considered an oversized suitcase?
An oversized suitcase is any checked bag that exceeds 62 linear inches (length + width + height).
Example: A bag measuring 30" x 20" x 12" equals 62 inches. That is the standard limit for most airlines. Anything larger is considered oversized and may cost extra fees.
Tips to avoid oversized fees:
- Measure your large travel suitcase before heading to the airport
- Choose medium size luggage dimensions (around 25–27 inches) for most trips
- Use carry ons and checked combinations to distribute weight and size
For peace of mind, always check your airline's specific size and weight limits before you fly.
